During the summer months, do you ever find yourself struggling to stay focused or motivated? Many can agree that avoiding this infamous summer slump– or as we like to call it, a case of the “f*ck its”– can feel impossible once temperatures begin to rise and the days get longer. We get it! And as always, we’re here to give our honest take.

Experiencing a “summer slump” is not as negative as you might think

First and foremost, a case of the F*ck Its doesn’t have to be viewed as a bad thing. In fact, at the heart of this phrase is a sense of letting go– the experience of discovering courage, taking risks, stepping outside of your comfort zone, experimenting, and giving yourself permission to do whatever feels right.

If you feel the summer slump creeping up more than usual this year, it’s likely rooted in the desire to relinquish control. Maybe…

You’re fed up with an aspect of your work

  • You’re not accustomed to saying “yes” to new experiences

  • You’re not accustomed to saying “no” to things you really don’t want to do

  • You have the desire to make a bold move

  • You acknowledge that you deserve to splurge every now and then

  • You have nothing to lose

…and, of course, the list goes on and on.

If productivity has slumped this summer, try this approach

The solution we keep coming back to in response to such a seasonal slump is to simply embrace it. Learn from the desire to let loose and change up the monotony of your day-to-day work life. You might try…

Breaking up your work day for an afternoon run

  • Splurging on self-care practices (e.g. getting a massage, facial, etc.)

  • Sharing an exciting, radical idea at the next all-staff meeting

  • Making an exception to your management approach and letting your all-star employee work internationally for a month

  • Starting your weekend early because the weather is incredible and these tasks can be wrapped up on Monday

  • Giving yourself permission to completely unplug when you take your vacation days

Following instinct, especially when it encourages you to take risks and challenge your normal working patterns, can refresh you in unimaginable ways.

If you’re experiencing a case of the “F*ck its” this summer, your employees probably are, too

Odds are, you aren’t the only one on your team who is experiencing this summer slump.
